How many vehicular fatalities occur in Illinois?

Car accidents are an unfortunate reality in Illinois and around the nation. Even as technology and automotive companies rush to advance technologies to improve safety, people continue to be seriously injured or killed in crashes every year. Interestingly these advances do not appear to have reduced the number of people who die as data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that in 2016 alone 1,082 lives were lost on Illinois roads and highways compared to 998 the prior year.

The increase in deaths that year was seen across many categories of either accident factors or locations and situations. Fatalities rose among people killed in accidents involving both excessive speed and alcohol as well as large commercial trucks. Wrecks at intersections or where at least one vehicle left its designated lane of travel also rose in 2016 versus 2015 statewide.

In Peoria County during the five years spanning 2012 to 2016, 83 people were killed in vehicular accidents. Of those, 46 died in accidents in which a vehicle crossed either the center line or an edge line designating the travel area and another 29 died in crashes in an intersection. Alcohol and speeding were noted factors in 30 and 33 of the deaths, respectively. The county lost 22 motorcyclists and eight pedestrians in this time period.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to give residents in Illinois an idea of the number of people killed each year in motor vehicle accidents and also some information about the factors or situations involved in some of these deadly events.
