Finding justice for loved ones

Tue 1 May, 2018 / by / General

Deciding to place a loved one in nursing home care can be a stressful process in itself. After the completion of all tasks that ensure a family member will receive utmost care, Illinois residents may assume the most challenging steps are over. Unfortunately, however, some deal with issues long after an elderly resident has moved into a new home. What kinds of incidents take place at elderly care facilities, and how can families keep a lookout for the red flags?

Just last month, the Belleville News-Democrat reported on a nursing home abuse incident at Collinsville Rehabilitation and Health Care Center — which ultimately claimed the life of a beloved patient. A member of the nursing home staff allegedly observed that the 81-year-old resident was not breathing; however, the nurse failed to take proper action, resulting in the woman’s death. The rest of the staff argued that the nurse failed to assess the situation in an appropriate manner, and that the resident’s life could have been saved. General nursing home regulations require staff to take emergency action if necessary, later turning to CPR and a 9-1-1 call, depending on the severity of the situation.

Incidents such as the one above are an experience no family wants to face. Yet as Fox News shares, red flags appear within nursing homes across the nation. With the ability to sue nursing homes for neglect still fresh on America’s mind, Fox goes on to state that researching facilities in-depth is one way to catch the warning signs. Scheduling a tour of the residence can also benefit patients greatly. Fox raises some common red flags, including a change in the patient’s behavior or signs of physical abuse. There are other warning signs to consider, such as poor health or a sudden loss in appetite. Dealing with a possible nursing home incident is hardly an easy obstacle, but the end goal is clear: finding justice for loved ones.
